“Ready to start the year, buddy?” John asked, placing a hand on his son’s shoulder. He was feeling calm and centered, having spent the morning ensuring everything was ready for his son's first day of first grade. He noticed the class roster nailed to the refrigerator door, and his eyes landed on the teacher's name: Ms. Reynolds. A slow smile spread across his face. He remembered Ms. Reynolds. He’d had her way back when, and he remembered her kindness and patience. He let out a low chuckle, a feeling of security blooming inside him, and gave his son’s shoulder a gentle squeeze.
